"Abandoned"

Sep 28, 2014 to Nov 30, 2014

Lydia Rae Black is a painter who literally seeks inspiration from what society throws away, namely, its garbage and forgotten places.  Black meticulously sources her images from places personally known to her and usually with some knowledge of the locale's history.  Through her paintings, Lydia Rae Black speaks of both consumerism and the basic need for shelter.

Black graduated from San Jose State University in 2009 with a BFA in pictorial arts. She continues to paint in the San Francisco Bay area in a thriving studio community of other artists.  Born in Neshoba County, Mississippi, she returns frequently to the South for continued artistic stimulation.

Quotes from the artist:

"I paint garbage because it is not precious, even when permeated with nostalgia, and it makes the painting more important as a painting than it is as a commemorative artifact of a time or place."

"There is a mystery to abandoned items and places, an unspoken narrative which takes place in the mind of the viewer."
