March is a month filled with a variety of exhibit and events.
Animals in watercolor
Animal paintings by Teresa Silvestri are presented in Art & the Animal at the Portola Art Gallery. Her recent watercolors are inspired by beloved pets as well as animals found in our wetlands and forests.
A reception for the exhibit will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. The show will continue through March 30.

At the County
Women’s View – 2018 opens March 2 in the Caldwell Gallery on the main floor of the Hall of Justice at 400 County Center, Redwood City.
The exhibit, the 14th annual San Mateo County Women’s Art Show, is co-sponsored by the San Mateo County Arts Commission and the Commission on the Status of Women.
The featured artists are all residents of San Mateo County or are employed by the county. Their art will be on view through April 30.
In the building’s lower level Community Gallery, the exhibit Visions of Hope, featuring watercolors by El Granada artist Ellen Silva, opens March 5 and runs through April 27.
Also, in the adjacent 555 County Center building, works by Redwood City sculptor Paul Powell are on view in the Rotunda Gallery through the end of June.

Salon Style
Part 1 of Salon Style: Collected Marks on Paper opens March 8 at the Anderson Collection at Stanford University. The show presents selected works on paper from the Anderson family collection.
The show will continue through August 20. The gallery is at 314 Lomita Drive on the university campus. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Admission is free. Call 650-721-6055.
Featuring Phill
Fusion, featuring paintings by Daniel Phill, opens March 9 at The Studio Shop, 244 Primrose Road, in Burlingame. A reception opening day will begin at 6 p.m., with an artist talk at 6:15 p.m.
Phill’s spontaneous work plays on boundaries between abstraction and representation. He earned a BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Stanford.

Transitions
Gallery House is showing Transitions in Life & Art through March 24.
Paintings by Magdalena Bogart center on transitions through life. Among them is “Setting In,” done in acrylic on wood.
The exhibit also features works by experimental painter and printmaker Sydell Lewis.

Four featured
Art Liaisons presents a show of works by Catherine Boutell, Aches One, Michael Toyama and Chuba Oyolu at Philz Coffee, 2116 Broadway, Redwood City.

Residency opportunities
The Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside has issued a Call for Applications for 4 and 5-week residencies at no cost to artists in a variety of disciplines. The program provides private studio space, food, lodging and local transportation.

Poetry and conversation
Booksmith at 1644 Haight Street in San Francisco is hosting an evening of poetry and conversation with Caroline Goodwin, who was the first Poet Laureate of San Mateo County, and writer Linda Norton from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 2.
Goodwin’s newest work is The Paper Tree; Norton’s is The Public Gardens.
